The proceeds from The Milk Run made a big impact for YPN (Young Parent Network) families during the holidays. On Thursday, December 13 we took a delivery of freshly-bottled milk from our creamery to Polk Elementary School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to distribute to families participating in YPN programming and although a free gallon of milk might not mean a lot to many people, the impact and appreciation we got from the YPN families, staff and volunteers tells us that this means so much to these families.
What is The Milk Run? This past summer we hosted our first ever 5K Fun Run that started and ended at our creamery in Ely, Iowa. The Milk Run began and ended at the Creamery. As 5K runners approached the halfway ‘turn around’ point they are able to run right alongside our heifer Holstein cows. Between the ambiance of running alongside the cows and being able to enjoy a pint of our farm-fresh chocolate milk at the finish line – The Milk Run is truly “The Milk Run.”
The mission and goal behind the 5K Fun run is more than just the run and the milk at the end, it serves a deeper purpose. A big part of healthy living is having access to the right food items to help children grow and thrive. The human body cannot make calcium, so the dairy foods that children eat and drink every day are important to their development and growth. Calcium is needed for strong, healthy bones and teeth. Especially in young toddlers because their bones are growing all the time.
Every runner that registered for the event helped to provide fresh, wholesome milk to families in need.
After attending the event and getting to pass out the milk to the families it’s clear how much a gallon of milk means to these families and we are so proud to have been able to partner with YPN. We received a note the following day of the milk distribution that said:
“Thank you once again for bringing the milk to the dinner and for our families last night. Our initial count indicated that we served over 125 parents and children with that delicious meal. You and your family made the holidays a little better and brighter for our families and we cannot thank you enough. We heard so many parents express their thanks for the milk last night – one mom even let out a little triumphant, “Thank goodness! Now I don’t have to stop at the store tonight!” which may be a small little Christmas miracle when you have two young children! Thank you again and Merry Christmas from the families and staff at YPN.” — Crystal Hall, Director of Programs / YPN
On behalf of our family, Dan and Debbie’s Creamery, YPN staff and volunteers we’d like to thank each and every participant who came out this past summer to participate and make providing this milk to these families possible.
